Self Leveling Concrete Beauty

Self leveling concrete is an amazing product. The beauty of self leverers is that you can control the height of your floor. They can also be stained and sealed. Mapei makes a self leveling product that can level smooth as glass with almost zero shrinkage. Other companies are working on similar products. During the past week I filmed the installation of Mapei self leveling concrete in a new restaurant. It was the only flooring solution that would work. One of the issues was that there was little thought about the floor until late in the project. This happens a lot. Flooring should be the first consideration in every project then design and build from there, not the other way around. All the moldings were already in and painted. Tile had been installed in the kitchen leaving a height issue where it meets the main floor. Entrance door had been installed leaving little height for flooring below the door. All the doorways had a height issue at the transition. The self leveling concrete solved all the height issues. The self leveler was poured thin, slightly more than 1/4 inch. A guage rake is used to pull the concrete to the exact height. The guage rake has feet that can be adjusted to the exact height you need.

It's amazing to watch. The self leveling concrete is very wet and flows to an even flat surface. Then a "Smoother" is used to flatten out even more. The Smoother is a tool that has flat edge on a pole that is pulled over the surface. The floor looked awesome when complete. It took 3 people about 90 minutes to resurface 1200 square feet. When complete you could see a perfect transition at all the doorways, entrance door could swing open freely, transition to tile in kitchen was perfect. The next day dark brown Acetone concrete dyes were sprayed randomly on the floor. Then a diluted brown concrete acid stain was sprayed over the entire floor and left on for 1 hour. Then they rinsed the acid stain to stop the chemical reaction with the concrete and to remove any residue.

The final step in the coloring process was application of diluted brown water based concrete dyes over the entire floor. The process was a combination of spraying then evening out the dye with a thick microfiber mop. The next day the self leveling concrete was sealed with 2 coats of a solvent based concrete sealer. The last step which brought it all together was application of a high solids floor finish. Once the second coat was applied the floor came alive. The final result was a highly functional, decorative, low maintenance floor. One very unique feature is the importance of wall color and lighting. The floor picked up reds from the awning outside. Copper panels reflected a copper color onto the floor. This is a feature that is not achieved from other flooring products and is critical when working with decorative concrete. There were imperfections as with all decorative concrete floors. But generally the floor was a thing of beauty. Any imperfections would not be evident since 80% over the floor would be covered with tables and chairs.

In this situation your eyes get more light from the environment and less from the TV itself. So when you watch TV in darkness the picture quality looks better because your eyes capture all the light from the TV and you perceive a better contrast, luminosity and saturation - which are the most important factors that affect picture quality. When you watch TV in a well lit room the ambient light will overlap with the TV light and it will make it look more washed and the colors will be less intense.

Generally Plasma TV screens are more reflective than LCD screens. At the same time, a plasma TV tends to offer better picture quality than LCD TVs in an environment with controlled lighting (a dark room). Because of these characteristics of plasma and LCD TV, they are recommended generally for different situations - plasma TVs for people who watch TV with lights turned off or dimmed and LCD TV for people who watch TV during daytime and have a lot of light in the room. In the real estate world from US there is a new record for the most expensive property on the market in the US today. This house is on the market for $165 million, and for this huge sum of money you get - 6.5 acres of land that include four houses, an apartment and a cottage for the security staff. The stats here are dazzling: three separate pools, 29 bedrooms, a movie theater and a disco (the main house has just nine bedrooms). The home was built in 1927 for banker Milton Getz and designed by Gordon Kaufmann. Hearst bought for $120,000 in 1947. The LA times reports that the home is currently owned by attorney-investor Leonard M. Ross, who is looking for a “lifestyle change.” Ross bought the home in 1976.

If you had acted fast 20 years ago, when the home was briefly on the market, you could have picked this place up for $25 million. As Curbed LA mentioned the home has been in several movies including The Godfather, The Jerk and The Bodyguard.

Today residence is designed by Ledbetter Fullerton Architects and is in New Orleans, LA.The owner of this house, an art collection, requested that the interiors be designed to highlight an extraordinary art collection while not feeling like a museum. A palette of neutral colors for fabrics, rugs, curtains, and wood paneling was chosen to create a warm surrounding for the collection of several hundred photographs and paintings. Every attempt was made to combine contemporary furnishings with European antiques in each room, emphasizing that the backdrop for the art is a comfortable home.

I haven't got my Christmas tree yet, but today I spotted a couple of very cute and geeky ideas for Christmas tree decorations. Pictured is an example of the range of decorations sold by Nigel's Eco Store out of the UK. They're made from recycled computer parts, if that's not obvious. :) If you're a DIY type with a lot of old computer bits lying around, I'm sure you could have some fun making something similar. Outdoor theaters are becoming more and more popular, although what constitutes a theater is up for interpretation. Many magazines today sing the outdoor theater's praises, but that theater might be just a plasma in a cabana or a couple of outdoor speakers. Engineered Environments in Alameda, California, however, has set the bar high for outdoor home theater.

To make room for this picturesque installation on Maui, the homeowner bought two adjacent properties and combined them, then remodeled the existing pool house and pool. The house is now approximately 14,000 square feet, and the poolside theater stands as one of its main attractions.

Engineered Environments previously worked on another of this client's homes in Lake Tahoe, so they were a natural choice—especially considering their local offices on the Big Island. "It's really about getting a nice big image and being immersed in surround sound," says Randy Stearns, owner of Engineered Environments.

For video, a Stewart Filmscreen front-projection screen on a pneumatic lift hides under a custom-made teak bench by the side of the pool. When it's time to watch a movie, the screen ascends from a concrete vault in the ground. Humidity is not a concern because the vault is completely watertight. Wind represents a major consideration when working with a screen of this size. "We installed a weather station to determine wind speed, which in turn determines whether or not it is safe to use the screen," says Stearns.

A DPI projector resides in watertight custom housing in the home's roof structure. There are several locations from which to enjoy a night outdoors at the movies. A 7.1-channel system from Community Loudspeaker—a company that specializes in large outdoor waterproof speakers—is installed throughout the various viewing locations. Audio operates on a matrix and is selectable from the AMX touchscreen, depending on whether guests are watching a movie from the rooftop deck, the pool cabana, or from the best seat in the house—a raft in the pool.
